Ho appena ricevuto notizie da Adrian, da poco rientrato, stanchissimo, al campo base avanzato.
Stamattina alle ore 8.15 locali, è partito insieme agli italiani, alla volta del C1, portando con se' una tenda, corde, moschettoni e attrezzatura varia, combustibile e un po' di alimenti, per un totale di circa 22kg di carico.
Dopo tre ore di ca
mmino difficoltoso sulle morene glaciali (ghiaia e sassi), altre tre ore di salita molto ripida su ghiaia e sabbia: ogni passo avanti, tornava indietro di mezzo... aggiungeteci il carico e l'altitudine e immaginate la fatica!
Verso le 14.15, finalmente Adrian è giunto al C1 (6405m), ma troppo stanco per montare rapidamente la tenda: si stava avvicinando brutto tempo e il gruppo di italiani dopo mezzora si stava già volgendo sulla via del ritorno. Adrian perciò ha lasciato tutto nella loro tenda ed è sceso insieme a loro.
Alle 18.40, ha fatto ritorno al campo base avanzato, senza nemmeno aver mangiato e soltanto bevuto un paio di litri di acqua e cocacola, con una lieve distorsione alla caviglia e con tanta stanchezza sulle spalle.
Nemmeno la soddisfazione di farsi una doccia, perchè la "shower-tent" non era ancora stata armata...
Ora riposerà due giorni al CBA, martedì prevede di salire con Julver di nuovo al C1, passare una notte lì, poi mercoledì salire a montare il C2 a 7200m e ridiscendere in giornata al CBA.
I tentativi alla cima del Cho Oyu sono previsti per la settimana a seguire (più o meno dal 2 al 7 ottobre). Devono ancora decidere se montare anche il C3, oppure tentare direttamente la cima partendo dal C2.
This morning, at 8.15am, Adrian has left ABC for C1, together with the Italians, carrying a tent, the climbing ropes, snap hooks and other equipment, fuel and food, for about 22kg overall.
After 3 hours of hard trekking on glacial morains, he spent three hours more climbing up on gravel and sand: every step on was a half step back... considering the weight on his shoulders and the altitude, you can only imagine what hard work was it!
At about 2.15 pm, Adrian arrived at C1 (6400m), but he was too tired to set up his tent, so he left all the equipment in the tent of the Italians and after half an hour he was on his way back with them.
At 6.40 pm he was back in the ABC, without eating anything, only drinking two liters of water and coke, with a light sprain on his ankle and so much weariness.
Neither the satisfaction of a good shower, because the shower-tent wasn't set up yet...
Now he is going to rest in the ABC two days, on Tuesday he may go up to the C1 again with Julver, spend a night there, so on Wednesday go up to C2 and set up the tent at 7200m, then go down to ABC.
They may attempt the summit of Cho Oyu next week (approximatively between 2nd and 7th October). They still have to decide if setting up C3 too, or attempting the summit from C2 directly.

Giornata di riposo al campo base avanzato per recuperare le energie spese ieri.
Alla mattina, Adrian e Julver hanno ricevuto la "puja", ossia la preghiera di benedizione degli sherpa.
Dopo aver allestito un piccolo altare fatto di rocce e appeso le tradizionali bandierine con le preghiere tibetane, gli sherpa hanno iniziato la loro particolare cerimonia, durata poi oltre un'ora e mezza. Ciascun alpinista ha portato con se' un oggetto che porterà nella scalata: Adrian ha presentato la sua piccozza. Dalle parole di Adrian, sembra sia stata una celebrazione molto suggestiva ed emozionante.
Tutta la giornata si è protratta tra la tenda, la mensa e il bagno...
Due pasti abbondanti e uno spuntino (pizza con cipolle e tonno a pranzo, un panino con salame e formaggio come spuntino, pollo pasta e patate per cena) hanno contribuito a ridare un po' di forze al nostro alpinista, ancora provato da ieri.
Julver non è ancora in forma: ha ancora febbre e problemi di gola e intestinali. Speriamo che un altro giorno di riposo possa servirgli a rimettersi in sesto, altrimenti martedì Adrian comunque salirà di nuovo al C1, dormirà lì e poi andrà a montare C2 il giorno seguente, per passare una notte lì e ridiscendere al CBA, eventualmente in compagnia degli italiani.
Verso le 19, al CBA ha cominciato a nevicare. Al momento di ritirarsi per dormire, due ore dopo, ancora nevicava... non una buona notizia, sapendo che la traccia oltre il C1 era già tanto carica di neve da impedire a chiunque di salire... Speriamo tutti nella clemenza del tempo!!
Resting day in ABC, to recover his own strenght.
In the morning, Adrian and Julver received the "puja", that is the sherpa blessing prayer. After setting up an altar made from rocks and hanging up their traditional prayer flags, the sherpas began their particular cerimony, which lasted more than an hour and a half. Every mountaineer brought an object, that he is going to carry with himself in the climb. Adrian handed his axe. He says it was a very suggesting and touching cerimony.
He spent all the day among the tent, the refectory and the toilet...
Two rich meals and a snack (pizza with onion and tuna for lunch, a sandwich with salami and cheese as snack, chicken pasta and potatoes for dinner) helped him in recovering part of his strenght.
Julver is not ok yet: he still has temperature, a sore throath and intestinal diseases. We hope that one more resting day will help him getting back to his feet again. Anyway, on Tuesday Adrian is going to C1 again, he is going to sleep there, on Wednesday he is going to set up C2 and to spend a night there, than going back to ABC on Thursday, everything eventually with the Italians.
At 7 pm, it began to snow in ABC. After two hours, when he went to sleep, it was still snowing... it's not a good news, since the track from C1 up was already laden with snow and noboby could go on... Let's hope in the clemency of the weather!

Nonostante la neve che continua a scendere da ieri e che è prevista anche per le prossime 24 ore, domani Adrian e Julver, finalmente ristabilitosi, saliranno al C1. Domani sera dormiranno lì e, se tutto va bene, dopodomani saliranno a montare il C2 per poi ridiscendere al CBA.
In spite of the snow which has been falling since yesterday and which is forecast for the next 24 hours too, tomorrow Adrian and Julver, at last recovered, are going up to C1. Tomorrow night they are going to sleep there and, if everything is alright, the day after tomorrow they will go and set up C2, then they will go back to ABC.

Oggi è stato molto difficile comunicare. Questo è quel poco che sono riuscita a capire tra i disturbi e le cadute della linea telefonica.
Adrian e Julver sono partiti stamattina dal campo base avanzato alle 9.15, con un bel sole che ha sciolto la neve caduta durante la notte. Adrian portava con se' 24kg, Julver circa 35kg, ma essendosi riposato i giorni scorsi era molto più fresco, perciò dopo poco ha distanziato Adrian, ancora stanco dalla salita dell'altro giorno.
Dopo circa 7 ore di dura salita, sotto la minaccia di una nuova nevicata, Adrian è arrivato al C1 a 6405m, un'ora dopo il gruppo degli italiani (che avevano già montato il C1 giorni fa e che erano partiti dal CBA un po' prima, gli unici oltre a loro a salire senza sherpa e senza ossigeno) e mezzora dopo Julver. Il montaggio della tenda è stato difficoltoso, a causa della stanchezza, del freddo e della tormenta di neve che dopo poco il loro arrivo si è scatenata.
Alle 17.45, esausti, erano pronti per andare a dormire, nella loro tenda a -5°C, dopo aver cucinato e mangiato una zuppa calda per scaldarsi.
Domani a metà mattina, tempo permettendo, partiranno per montare il C2 a circa 7200m.

Today it has been very hard to communicate. This is what little I have understood among the noise and the drops of the line.
Adrian and Julver left this morning from ABC at 9.15am, with a shining sun that melted the snow which fell during the night. Adrian was carrying 24kg with himself, Julver about 35kg, but he was fresher than Adri was, so he distanced him soon.
After 7 hours of hard trekking, Adrian got to C1, an hour after the Italians (who had set up C1 some days ago and had left ABC earlier, the only ones, besides them, who are going up without sherpas nor oxygen mask) and half an hour after Julver. The setting up of the tent was very hard, because of the tiredness, the cold and the snowstorm that rised a short time after their arrival.
At 5.45 pm, exhausted, they were going to sleep, after cooking and eating a warm soup to warm themselves.
Tomorrow morning, if the weather permits, they will go and set up C2 at about 7200m.

Che giornata!
E' difficile spiegare l'apprensione per oggi... e il sollievo a sentirli arrivati e sistemati!
D'altronde è la prima volta che entrambi superano di così tanto i 7000 e vi si fermano a dormire... Congratulazioni ragazzi!
Purtroppo so molto poco della loro salita, sempre a causa delle comunicazioni difficoltose e del poco fiato a disposizione per parlare!
Sono partiti stamattina -presumo- verso le 10.30 ora locale. Quando sono riuscita a contattarli alle 8 italiane infatti (le 11.45 tibetane), erano partiti da circa un'ora: Adrian era già molto affaticato, avevano coperto un dislivello di soli 100m e ne mancavano altri 700!
Non so molto del percorso, a parte che era tutto su neve e ghiaccio, con alcune pareti quasi impossibili (mi ha parlato di una verticale di oltre 100m!), superabili solo grazie alle corde fisse messe alcuni giorni fa da degli sherpa... e alla loro resistenza!
Alle 15.45 tibetane, erano a circa 7000m, mancavano altri 200m di dislivello ma il peggio era passato, anche se prevedevano altre 2 ore di cammino.
Sono riuscita finalmente a sentirli ancora soltanto 4 ore dopo (le 19.30 locali). Devo ammettere di avere sofferto abbastanza l'attesa! Erano in tenda, nel loro sacco a pelo, molto molto stanchi ma contenti di essere riusciti nell'impresa, faceva molto freddo ma fortunatamente non nevicava. Entrambi avevano un modesto mal di testa per l'altitudine.
Ora a loro il meritato riposo... domani si torna al campo base avanzato.

It's hard to explain the concern for today... and the relief when I heard they were arrived and everything was ok!
On the other hand, this is the first time that they both go far beyond the 7000m and stop to sleep up there... Congratulations, guys!
Unfortunately, I know very little about their ascent, because of the difficult comunication and the little breath they had to spend in speaking!
They left C1 this morning -I think- at about 10.30 am (local time). When I succeeded in contacting them at 8 am (11.45 am Tibetan time), they had been walking for a hour: Adrian was already very tired, they had covered 100m in height and 700m were still missing!
I don't know very much about the itinerary: it was all on snow and ice, with some impossible walls (he told me about a vertical one, high more than 100m!), that they overcame thanks to some fix ropes... and to their endurance!
At their 3.45 pm (Tibetan time), they were at 7000m, 200m more were missing but the hardest part was over, even if they foresaw two hours more of walk.
Finally, I could speak with them again only 4 hours later (19.30 in Tibet). I must admit I have suffered the waiting pretty much! They were in the tent, in their sleeping bag, they were very very tired but happy to have succeeded in the exploit, it was very cold but it wasn't snowing.
They both were suffering a modest headache because of the altitude.
Now they are resting... tomorrow they are going back to ABC.

La notte appena trascorsa è stata la loro prima notte in assoluto a quote così elevate e nemmeno loro sapevano come l'avrebbero passata.
Non è stata una notte del tutto tranquilla, a causa del freddo, del mal di testa provocato dall'altitudine e dei continui risvegli, ma in fin dei conti non è andata così male ed esserne usciti senza grossi problemi è già un successo e una conferma che, sì, ce la possono fare!
Altri che hanno dormito al C2 si sono sentiti molto male e hanno desistito definitivamente dal raggiungere la vetta.
Adrian e Julver hanno lasciato i 7205m del C2 in mattinata, ripercorrendo il cammino di ieri a ritroso il più velocemente possibile, in quanto sulle loro teste incombeva un brutto temporale. Al C2, Adrian e Julver hanno lasciato una tenda e i sacchi a pelo, in previsione del loro ritorno settimana prossima. Al C1 hanno ritrovato la loro tenda in una posizione scomoda, lambita dalle acque di scioglimento dei ghiacci, perciò l'hanno smontata e rimontata su un balcone di roccia insieme ad altre tende, in una posizione un po' esposta ai venti (speriamo la ritrovino!) ma panoramica... pure esigenti questi alpinisti! Qui, hanno lasciato gli scarponi e altro materiale che non servirà loro per tornare qui.
E poi via, giù al CBA, attraverso quel brutto "sentiero" sulle morene che Adrian detesta tanto, che ha già percorso 4 volte e che almeno altre 2 dovrà rifare se vuole arrivare in cima! Poco prima di arrivare al CBA, ha iniziato a nevicare, e quando li ho sentiti stasera, fuori dalla loro tenda imperversava una bella tormenta.
Nei prossimi giorni dovrebbe continuare a fare brutto tempo, nessuno sa quando passerà questa perturbazione. In ogni modo, Adrian e Julver riposeranno al CBA per quattro o cinque giorni, per recuperare energie, peso, sonno, idratazione, almeno parte di quanto hanno perso in questi tre giorni, in vista della grande impresa. Si spera che nel frattempo queste nuvole passino... e che qualcun altro prima di loro apra la traccia...
Adrian è rimasto molto impietosito dalla visione di sherpa minuti, carichi come muli, che per 15 euro al giorno trasportano oltre 30kg di roba dal CBA ai campi superiori, mentre i loro "clienti" salgono leggeri come degli scolari in gita d'istruzione, magari con le maschere d'ossigeno... Questo è il nuovo alpinismo!!!...???
I nostri "eroi" hanno tutta un'altra visione della montagna: è una sfida con loro stessi, mettono alla prova le proprie capacità, hanno in mente la vetta ma ovunque arriveranno per loro sarà comunque un successo. Personalmente, sono d'accordo con loro, e sono molto fiera e orgogliosa di quello che stanno facendo e di come la pensano. Voi no?

The last night was their first night at such an altitude, and they didn't know how they would have spent it.
They couldn't sleep very well because of the cold, the headache and the frequent awakenings, but it hasn't been so bad: they hadn't any big problem, and this is a success and a confirmation that, yes, they can!
Adrian and Julver left C2 in the morning and they walked downhill as fast as possible, since a big storm was hanging over their heads. In the C2, they left a tent and their sleeping bags.
At the C1, they found their tent in a bad position so they moved it on a balcony, with a panoramic view... how choosy these two mountaineers are!
Then quick! down to ABC, along that "path" on morains that Adrian hates, that he has already walked along four times and that he has to walk along twice again, if he wants to reach the top!
Before reaching ABC, it started snowing, and tonight still was. Next days, it should go on snowing, nobody knows when it should stop. Anyway, Adrian and Julver are going to rest in ABC for 4-5 days, to recover energy, sleep, weight, idratation, at least a part of how much they have lost these three days. We hope that in the meantime these clouds are passing over... and that someone else is opening up the track!
Adrian was moved to pity by the little sherpas, overloaded, who, for 15€ a day, carry more than 30kg from CBA to the superior camps, while their "customers" are going up, light as a student in a school outing, maybe with oxigen masks too... This is the new mountaineering!!!...???
Our "heroes" have a totally different vision of the mountain: this is a challenge with themselves, they are putting themselves through the hoops, they have the summit in their head but, wherever they'll arrive, this will be a success! Personally, I agree with them, I'm really proud of them, of what they are doing and what they think! Don't you?

Giornata di riposo al CBA, dopo le fatiche dei giorni scorsi.
Oggi ha nevicato forte tutto il giorno, tanto che alcuni alpinisti sono stati soccorsi tra il C1 e il C2, bloccati dalla neve.
Adrian e Julver stanno bene, anche se Adrian soffre di tosse, mal di gola e un po' di disturbi intestinali...
Si fermeranno al CBA finchè le condizioni metereologiche non miglioreranno: secondo le mie informazioni, dovrebbe essere bello domani, ma poi arriverà una perturbazione che non si sposterà dall'Himalaya almeno fino a giovedì sera.
Non c'è che da aspettare fiduciosi per la fine di settimana prossima! Intanto i nostri ragazzi cercheranno di riposare e di recuperare tutte le energie per "l'attentato alla vetta"!!!

They are going to stay there until the weather is getting better: according to my information, tomorrow is going to be good, but then a perturbation is coming and it will stick on Himalaya until Thursday evening, at least.
We have to do nothing but wait and hope for an improvement for the next weekend! In the meantime, our boys are resting and restore energies for the "summit attempt"!!!
